  • How do antimicrobial coatings work?

Antimicrobial coatings (AMCs) are nanoscopic coatings—in other words, measured in billionths of inches—that bond to surfaces.

They act like a layer of electrically charged swords that pull microorganisms down onto their blades, puncture them, and shock them with an electrical charge, killing the organisms.

No chemical is “used up” in the process because antimicrobial coatings are non-leaching.

AMCs do not lose strength and are in place ready to kill the next microorganisms, bacteria, or mold spores they encounter.

Regular cleaning helps to remove dirt and dead microbes so that buildup does not lessen the coatings' ability to kill microorganisms.

Unlike traditional disinfectants, which remain effective for only a very short time, antimicrobial coatings bond to surfaces and remain in place, killing contaminants 24/7.

  • How long do antimicrobial coatings last?

Antimicrobial coatings form a very strong bond to the surfaces to which they are applied. Normal cleaning & disinfection chemicals will not effect the bond or remove the antimicrobial coating. Only abrasion, or wear, will impact the life of the coating on the surfaces.

With no wear, the coating will remain on the surface, working, for a very long period of time.

Standard practice is to reapply every 90 days (quarterly) but in some very high traffic applications, such as public transportation systems, the application is done monthly.

  • Does surface dirt affect the AMC?

Apply an antimicrobial coating to a dirty surface, and it will bond to the dirt. It makes sense, then, that if you remove that dirt, you leave behind an untreated surface—reducing the effectiveness of the AMC.

Abrasive or caustic cleaners may also shorten the useful life of an antimicrobial coating.

  • What preparation is necessary before applying antimicrobial coatings?

Surfaces should be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected. A disinfectant and cleaner can be used preceding the application of antimicrobial coating to help the AMC bond to the surface.

If you’re wondering how to do that, don’t worry—it’s all part of our service. When you book an appointment with System4 IPS, we take care of it all.

  • How should contaminated surfaces be treated?

Microbes can be extremely hazardous. For normal contamination, solid surfaces should be thoroughly cleaned before treatment. All porous surfaces, such as carpets and upholstery, should be well vacuumed or professionally cleaned.

  • Are antimicrobial coatings safe?

Our antimicrobials are non-toxic, odorless, colorless, hypoallergenic and have been registered by the EPA.

  • How are antimicrobial coatings different from other disinfectants?

Traditional disinfectants represent a reactive approach to cleaning—“this surface is contaminated, so we need to clean it.” They last only seconds because a disinfected surface only stays that way until contact with another infectious agent.

They are often incorrectly applied, as well. Sometimes the disinfectant isn’t used for a long enough time to properly disinfect a surface, or the person doing the work may miss part of the area that is supposed to be cleaned.

Antimicrobial coatings, on the other hand, continuously destroy microorganisms. They last up to a year, depending on the surface treated. They represent a proactive strategy—“we want to protect this surface from becoming infected.”

And when professionally applied by trained technicians with the kind of high-tech equipment System4 IPS uses exclusively, application errors are eliminated. AMC particles completely and thoroughly coat exposed surfaces and remain there.

For 24/7 protection, there’s only one choice—an antimicrobial coating.

  • Are antimicrobial coatings water-repellent?

No. Although the treatment may be slightly water-repellent after application, water and moisture pass through the antimicrobial coating just as they would pass through a bed of swords.

  • How are antimicrobial coatings applied?

Trained System4 IPS technicians using the latest electrostatic spraying or fogging technology apply the product. Our equipment ensures uniform and thorough coverage by imparting an electrostatic charge to the droplets, which at 30-60 microns can be up to 90 times smaller than what is applied by a non-electrostatic, air-assisted sprayer. The electrical charging causes a natural force of attraction between the spray droplets and target surface, similar to the attraction between items of clothing created by the tumbling of a clothes dryer. The charge on the droplets is small, but the force pulling the spray towards the target is up to 75 times greater than the force of gravity. Droplets reverse direction and move upwards, against gravity, when passing a target surface, providing a uniform 360-degree coating.

  • How long does it take an AMC to dry?

Antimicrobial coatings are applied with an electrostatic sprayer (or fogger) with droplets up to 90 times smaller than a traditional sprayer. This ultrafine spray bonds to surfaces and dries within minutes.

We recommend waiting 15-20 minutes after application to reenter the facility.

  • How do you clean a surface that has had an AMC applied?

Antimicrobial coatings form a strong bond with the surfaces to which they are applied. Routine cleaning and disinfecting will not remove the product. In fact, regular cleaning of treated surfaces removes dirt, dust, and dead microbes that could cover the treatment and limit its ability to kill microorganisms. (In other words, cleaning refreshes the antimicrobial coating.)

Antimicrobial coatings cannot be rubbed off or removed unless aggressive abrasives are used.

  • What do I need to do before the System4 IPS team comes to my facility?

Surfaces to be coated—high-traffic touch-point surfaces in particular—should be clean and free of dirt, dust, and debris. If you treat a dirty surface, antimicrobial coatings will bond to the dirt, and when that dirt comes off, the effectiveness of the antimicrobial will decrease.

We will disinfect your surfaces before we apply the AMC.

However, the System4 IPS team will not move items left on counters, desks, tables, or shelves. Those items left on surfaces will be treated, but the surface on which the item rests will be untreated.

In some cases, you may choose to leave items on surfaces intentionally. A phone left on a desk will be treated, but the surface of the desk beneath the phone will not. The phone is a high use touchpoint, but the surface beneath it is not.
